TRANSLOCAL RECONVERSION
JUN 2021
This work is a critical reflection on the highrise in Brussels, more specifically the South Tower. I challenge the relevance of this building through the lens of conservation and with that dismiss the studio's request for a small intervention. I propose a bottom-up re-use. Testing it to reality by creating a 1:20 model and a detailed cost analysis.
SURRENDER RESISTANCE
JAN 2021
As part of the engagement Mediating Tactics, this studio challenged me to create a critical reflection work on the Unadapted City, by Luc Deleu. I made a comparison between Chandigarh and Brussels both studied and reflected in by Luc Deleu.
The outcome is a naive redesign of Brussels city with a negative grid, allowing for new opportunities. Later also exhibited as part of the student exhibition in DeSingel in Antwerp, curated by VIA (Flemish Institute of Architecture)
LIVING HERITAGE
Reactivation of post-industrial heritage through redefinition of the unbuilt space
JUN 2022
As my master thesis I proposed the bottom-up re-use of a post-industrial site as a catalyst for work-living, giving facilities to the surrounding community, and creating new opportunities for culture and tourism. Defining the unbuilt space surrounding the factory eases further appropriation. The addition of housing strengthens and diversifies the community. A slow collective and evolutionary process brings together newcomers and natives, and aims to give them new agency over the site.
ABSTRACT VS SPECIFIC
JUN 2020 Bachelorproject
My final bachelor project consists of one abstract project including an auditorium and one specific housing project of 100m²/familie with 3kids. My abstract is more on the scale of urban planning, where it consists of a group of smaller buildings spread out on 3 adjacent squares. My specific house is a co-living house situated around a big round void and 2 stairs, one for each family to their separate sleeping areas.
LOCK PATH
NOV 2019
For my 1st architecture project, we were asked to create a space-sensitive intervention with a later added program. The program was a short-term stay for 1-2 people, 1/2 days. Inspired by the waterlock, I opened up the current enclosed site and created an extension to the existing network of walking trails.
LIVING WTC
JUN 2018 GRAD
My final project consists of two parts. On one hand, I design a temporary living-unit out of triangle panels. These serve as wall, floor and ceiling. On the other hand… During my search for a location, I came across the WTCI, the Noordwijk and learned about its history. 49 years ago, a complete neighbourhood was destroyed to create the “new” Noordwijk. The adjacent neighbourhood reacted with a series of wall paintings on the border of the two. Eventually, also this neighbourhood disappeared. Today the WTCI is almost completely unoccupied. The goal of my project is to recreate this vibrant neighbourhood inside the WTC tower, and tell the story of the past by resurfacing the paintings.
URBAN CATALYST
JUN 2017
This is a project of personal choice. I wanted to give a new life to an old textile factory in my hometown. Since the current plan is to demolish the factory and create a new residential area. I wanted to give this property a temporary social function, with the eye on a more permanent one in time. This project will serve the current and future neighbourhood.
Functions include music, sewing, woodshop, market, exhibition, parc, sports, play garden, vegetable gardens, skating, events ...
STOKERIJ
JAN 2017
Project 4 involved the reconversion of a building from the 40's where the heating for the school campus used to be generated. Now there are plans to reconvert it into a student restaurant. I wanted to create an escape zone, and with the old function, the concept became Fire Escape. Fire and stairs are central, as the balconies watch over the open kitchen, as in a theater.
Metal and concrete = after war period.
-perforated- metal = translucency and reflection. Colour = contrast with classrooms.
PAVILION
NOV 2017
The goal of this project was to create a pavilion on campus that is multifunctional. It should be used as a hangout but should also be an extension to the workplaces. I chose a semi-outdoor space with natural lighting. The technique used was "Volta Catalana", inspired by my Erasmus. The organic design is in contrast with its environment, while the brick blends in with the rest of the school. Inside, the same white boxes are used as in the current workspaces. These serve as seating, sketching objects, and pedestal for exhibitions.
OPEN EINDE
NOV 2016
The goal was to create a space of reflection within the theme "mourning". Situated down the hill from 3 churchyards on a large open field by a creek. The concrete was used as a darker, more natural colour to blend in with its environment, while it won't be affected by the occasional floodings in wintertime. The translucent glass is used to play with the light at daytime, but can also be lighted up at night.
PAVILION
OCT 2015
For our 1st project, we were asked to make a pavilion with the function "meeting/social gathering". We were given a location and a few squares of several sizes. All the squares had to be used and placed in a box. The openings were limited and had to have the same size as the squares.
