ABOUT ME

Hello, I'm Tess an interior designer and architect, specialising in restauration. Yes, a mix of two. As a freelancer I have been assisting people and businesses with their interiors, for the last 7 years. Since 2022 I have also graduated as an architect. Currently, I am working with a restauration office in Brussels. Here I get to learn the arts of the passed and develop into a fully experienced architect and project manager one day.

I began my educational journey in interior design and early on decided I would like to continue in architecture. 'Interior design' has made me completely focus on the creative and the human, experiential side of architecture. While 'architecture' has been able to teach me the technical know-how. In my second year I was approached with an opportunity, since then I have been freelancing as an interior designer. This has made me grow very comfortable with client contact, presentation, and negotiation.

I have a great love for travelling. Over the last few years, I have been able to visit many destinations and learn from various cultures, practices, and styles. This interest first started with my Erasmus to Barcelona in 2018, ever since I have travelled to many destinations, taking maximum opportunities during school holidays. During my travels, I like to get beyond the monumental architecture or often very hospitable locals, but I try to experience the country and understand the context, identify patterns and practices.  Solo traveling has enabled me to be more attentive to my environment and connect with locals. I have been transforming my journal notes into a travel portfolio, which I am currently slowly uploading here.

URBAN CATALYST CITY PROPOSAL

DE SINGEL VIA

BODEGHEM SHELTER

In 2017 my first professional experience started in Barcelona. It began with shadowing 3 companies within the university project 'Internationalisation'. I later returned for an internship in fall 2017 and summer 2018.

In 2017 I proposed an alternative development of a factory site that will be demolished and converted into a classic residential area. I put a lot of focus on analysis and neighbourhood interviews. I asked for several documents from the city council and later presented my ideas in return. My work was received with much enthusiasm and the city quickly started searching for opportunities to execute this idea. Two more meetings followed to find a budget. The last meeting took place with the project developer who unfortunately did not see sufficient financial profits.

In Mai 2021 50 years of Luc Deleu's archive was exhibited in De Singel, Antwerp. For the occasion, several Flemish universities incorporated a critical design studio based on his work. My work was later chosen by The Flemish Institute of Architecture, to be exhibited in the student exhibition among work of 2 other universities in Flanders.

My elective 'Altering Practices for Urban Inclusion' has given me the opportunity to work on the future of the Bodghem shelter in Brussels. The shelter will scale down the number of residents, solely focussing on the shelter of homeless men. Together with the office Architekt-nburo we developed new plans for the future, including a gradient of privacy. New common rooms will be introduced on every floor for every 9 residents.

In the second part, we focussed on appropriate furniture and enabling appropriation. We proposed several concepts for flexible furniture, but due to the scale down and the current access of furniture, we went with the concept of Re-Use. This later evolved into a 5-day workshop in which we created 4 elements allowing the appropriation of the downstairs dining room.
